At Avery’s request, they made a brief stop at the sheriff’s office. Dirks liked the man, liked what his initial investigation into the town had told him about the man. Honesty and integrity in law enforcement wasn’t a rarity but it was nothing to take for granted either.

Farley was clearly disappointed that he still couldn’t offer anything concrete. “I promise I won’t stop digging but I can’t say I expect to find who actually fired those shots, Avery. I’d be lying if I told you I did.”

Silently, Dirks agreed. There was about as much chance of that as finding the proverbial needle in a haystack.

“Did the garage get your SUV ready to go yet? I didn’t check with them this morning but Jeff told me they were close to being finished yesterday.”

“Unfortunately, no,” Avery told him, “they called earlier. The seat that was shipped to them from New Orleans came in just before closing yesterday evening and it wasn’t the right model. They’re waiting for the replacement. Once that’s delivered and installed, I can pick it up.”

“Well, if you need one of us to run out to the ranch and get you when it’s ready, just give me a call.”

Avery’s smile was affectionate and Dirks realized he didn’t like seeing quite that much warmth toward the sheriff who apparently was more than a little fond of her.

“I’m sure that won’t be necessary but I’ll keep it in mind.” She hesitated. “You haven’t heard anything more about the ‘high flyers’ you mentioned last time I was here?”

Dirks suspected she would’ve worded that question much less vaguely if he hadn’t been there. He knew she didn’t trust him completely and he couldn’t blame her for that. She had to feel that anything he knew and heard could be used to deny her application. What she didn’t realize was that not being approved for the program would be the least of her problems at that point.

“Nothing. I haven’t heard a word.” The sheriff didn’t seem too happy about it either. “Nothing else has happened at your place, has it?”

“Nothing else? Other than dead animals in water troughs and a saddle damaged with intent to get someone hurt, maybe even killed, and Carlee being knocked down by someone trying to steal a yearling, you mean?”

Farley scrubbed his hand over his brow. “I’d lock him up if I could, Avery.”

Her expression softened. “I know that, Ben. I don’t fault you for any of this. I just don’t know what to do about it.”

“All you need to do is keep watching out for yourself and I’ll keep sending a patrol car through as often as I can.”

But Dirks could tell neither the sheriff nor Avery believed, any more than he did, that those measures would be a deterrent to whoever was behind what was happening. At this point, he suspected that not even locking Danson up as the sheriff wanted to do would alter what had been set in motion.
